Common name

Description

Rhizome horizontal to suberect, covered with red-brown hairs (up to 7 mm long). Fronds tufted, erect, hemidimorphic. Stipe of fertile fronds up to 23 cm, stipe of sterile fronds up to 10 cm. Stipe with hair-like scales when young, subglabrous when older. Sterile lamina up to 14 × 11 cm, ovate to triangular in outline, bipinnate to tripinnatifid with spreading pinnae; ultimate segments rounded, oblong, minutely crenate, thinly hairy on both surfaces. Fertile pinnea tripinnatifid, ultimate segments reduced, glabrous to sparsely hairy, petiolules up to 8 cm. Sporangia in two rows.         

Notes

Similar to A. angolensis but fertile segments hairless or with few hairs

Derivation

simii: named after T.R.Sim (1858-1938), author of " The ferns of South Africa " (1892)

Habitat

Rocky habitats and undergrowth of seasonally dry miombo woodland. Terrestrial or lithophyte.

Distribution in Africa

Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe.
